Tunnel Books

I’m kind of falling in love with the tunnel book. The one above is the prototype I made for class. Of all the book structures we’ve made so far, this one is by far my favorite. I love the idea of a book being more than just the covers, text block, etc… Bookbinding has taught me that books can be so much more than that! They can be all different shapes and sizes, and they can have all kinds of movable parts…

Anyway, tunnel books! What is a tunnel book? It’s basically exactly what it sounds like: a book with a tunnel in it. They consist of a series of pages with smaller and smaller sections cut out. This creates something of a 3D look. They’re beautiful, charming creations and I can’t wait to make more of them!

And here is a link to some really interesting information about a tunnel book owned by the Smithsonian and how they repaired it: http://smithsonianlibraries.si.edu/smithsonianlibraries/2010/04/the-dance-of-the-tunnel-book.html
